Is Metashape cheaper than Pix4D?

Yes, by a wide margin on the license. Metashape Professional at $3,499 costs less than one year of PIX4Dmapper at $3,990, and it keeps working after year one. Over three years one Metashape seat is $3,499 against $11,970 for PIX4Dmapper, a gap of $8,471. The gap shrinks only if a new major Metashape version forces a paid upgrade, or if you add Agisoft Cloud compute for large jobs.

Do not be tempted by the $179 Standard edition for survey work. Agisoft reserves orthomosaic export, DEM generation and ground control georeferencing for Professional, which are exactly the outputs a civil or survey client pays for.

What Pix4D really costs a survey firm

PIX4Dmapper is the product most surveyors mean when they say Pix4D. At $3,990 a year it gives one floating desktop license, used on one device at a time, with GCP and checkpoint workflows, volumes, contours and a quality report. PIX4Dmatic is the newer engine for large and corridor jobs, from $2,290 to $4,990 a year depending on the tier.

Two costs sit outside the license:

• Sharing: a client link, surveys compared over time or a design overlay means PIX4Dcloud, from $1,290 a year for Starter to $4,490 for Pro.
• Hardware: Mapper and Matic run on your workstation, ideally with an NVIDIA card, and the machine is busy for hours on a large flight.

What Metashape really costs a survey firm

Metashape Professional is cheap to buy and expensive in time. The license is node-locked, so it lives on one computer, and a second person processing at the same time needs a second $3,499 license and a second capable PC. Floating licenses exist but are sold through resellers at a quoted price.

Metashape rewards an analyst who likes control. You set alignment accuracy, key point limits, depth filtering and mesh parameters per project, and you can script the whole pipeline in Python. That flexibility is why it is popular with 3D and heritage work. It also means a new hire takes longer to produce a survey deliverable the firm is willing to sign.

What a 3-person survey team pays over 3 years

Take a small civil and survey firm with a pilot, a CAD technician and a project manager. They fly 6 to 8 sites a month, around 5,000 images, and deliver contours, stockpile volumes and a map the client can open.

The honest read: if one skilled analyst processes every flight on one PC, Metashape Professional is the cheapest line on this table and nothing else comes close. Pix4D costs roughly three times as much per seat over three years but gives a guided survey workflow and an accuracy report clients recognize. The cloud plan with seats wins once two or three people need to measure the same surfaces and the client expects a link.

Which should a survey firm buy?

Buy Metashape Professional when you have one experienced analyst, you want to own the license, you process on Mac or Linux, or you want to script the pipeline. Buy Pix4D when you want a guided workflow for engineers and DOT clients, a floating license that moves between office PCs, and a vendor cloud for sharing. Buy a cloud platform with seats included when your bottleneck is people waiting on one workstation, not processing settings.

Whichever you choose, run one real flight through each before you commit. Load the same ground control, hold two or three points back as checkpoints and compare RMSE in X, Y and Z along with a surveyed stockpile volume. Then price three years for the number of people who really need access.

Is Pix4D more accurate than Metashape?

Not in a way you can buy. With the same photos, the same GCPs and the same checkpoints, both produce survey-grade results, and the difference is usually smaller than the error from poor overlap or badly placed control. Pix4D's quality report is more familiar to engineering clients. Metashape gives an expert more settings to squeeze a hard dataset.

Can I use Metashape or Pix4D on a Mac?
