Dronemapping

Pix4D vs DroneDeploy for survey teams, pricing and outputs compared

Pix4D sells a desktop engine (PIX4Dmapper at $3,990 a year for one device at a time) and a separate cloud subscription (PIX4Dcloud from $1,290 a year). DroneDeploy sells one cloud platform, with its only printed plan, Flight & Analysis, at $4,188 a year for a single admin user and cut and fill on a quoted tier. Pick Pix4D for processing control on your own workstation, DroneDeploy for flight planning and processing in one app. If you need several people measuring at once for a printed price, Dronemapping starts at $99 per month with 3 seats.

Worked example

What a 3-person survey team pays for Pix4D, DroneDeploy and Dronemapping over 3 years

Take a small civil and survey firm: a pilot, a CAD technician and a project manager. They fly 6 to 8 sites a month, about 5,000 images, and each client wants contours, a volume report and a link to the map within a week.

Cost over 3 years Pix4D DroneDeploy Dronemapping Team
Software PIX4Dmapper $11,970 plus PIX4Dcloud Starter $3,870 for sharing, $15,840 Flight & Analysis $12,564 for one user, without cut and fill $7,470 on yearly billing ($2,490 a year)
Three people measuring One device processes at a time, others view in the cloud Needs a quoted team plan Included, 10 seats
Cut and fill and GCP reports GCP reports on desktop, design comparison on PIX4Dcloud Pro Quoted Advanced tier Included on Team
Processing workstation One capable Windows PC, bought and kept current by you Not needed Not needed
Price known before a sales call Yes Only for one user Yes

Where each one wins, honestly: Pix4D gives an experienced analyst the most control over processing, and a single license covers heavy desktop work with no image cap. DroneDeploy wins when the same crew wants to plan flights, capture ground 360 walkthroughs and process in one app, and when the budget allows a quoted team contract. Dronemapping wins when several people need to measure and share the same surfaces and the firm wants a written price. A solo pilot under 3,000 images a month pays $2,970 over three years on our Starter plan.

Honest fit

When Pix4D is the better choice than DroneDeploy

Pix4D suits firms where processing quality is a craft and one person owns it:

  • You want to tune calibration, densification and filtering settings project by project.
  • You already own a strong Windows workstation, or you need to process where there is no internet.
  • You fly large corridors or quarries where a 3,000 image per map cap would force you to split jobs.
  • You want terrestrial capture with PIX4Dcatch alongside aerial work.
  • You would rather pay for one desktop license than a cloud seat per person.

The trade is time and hardware. Processing ties up the machine, and sharing results with clients means adding PIX4Dcloud or sending files.

Honest fit

When DroneDeploy is the better choice than Pix4D

DroneDeploy suits construction and operations teams that want one vendor for the whole drone program:

  • Flight planning, processing and sharing happen in one app, so field crews need little training.
  • Nothing runs on your own hardware, so a laptop or tablet is enough in the office.
  • You capture interiors and ground progress as well as aerial maps.
  • Your company is fine negotiating a quoted team or enterprise contract with add-ons.

The trade is price visibility. The only plans with a printed price are single-user ones, and cut and fill, unlimited GCPs and more than 3,000 images per map all sit on a quoted tier.

The third option

Why survey firms pick Dronemapping over both

Most firms that compare Pix4D and DroneDeploy want the same four things, and neither vendor puts all four on a printed plan.

  1. 01

Seats inside the plan: the pilot, the CAD tech and the project manager all measure the same surface, with no license per person.

  2. 02

No workstation: jobs process in the cloud, so the office PC stays free while a 3,000 image flight runs.

  3. 03

Survey outputs without a quote: GCP and checkpoint reports in X, Y and Z, DXF and SHP contours, stockpile PDFs and cut and fill sit on the Team plan at $249 per month.

  4. 04

Client links on every plan: the orthomosaic, surfaces and volumes open in any browser, with an optional expiry date.

What we do not do: we do not fly the drone and we do not process LiDAR. Plan the grid in DJI Pilot 2 or the planner you use now and upload the geotagged JPEGs.

Switching

How to test Pix4D, DroneDeploy and Dronemapping on the same flight

The fair test is one real site run through each tool, with control held back as checkpoints.

  • Pick a site you know: use a flight where you have a checked elevation or a surveyed stockpile volume.
  • Keep the same control: load the same GCP file in every tool and hold two or three points back as checkpoints.
  • Compare the numbers: read checkpoint RMSE in X, Y and Z and the stockpile volume, not how pretty the orthomosaic looks.
  • Price the real team: count the people who need to measure and price three years for that number, not for one user.

Pricing

What Dronemapping costs next to Pix4D and DroneDeploy

Starter is $99 per month or $990 per year: orthomosaic, DSM and DTM, measurements and volumes, view links, 3 seats and 3,000 processed images a month. Team is $249 per month and adds the 3D textured model, the dense point cloud as LAS or LAZ, GCP and checkpoint reports, DXF and SHP contours, stockpile PDFs and cut and fill, with 10 seats and 15,000 images. Business is $599 per month for 50,000 images, 25 seats, multispectral indices, the progress timeline and the API. Yearly billing gives 2 months free.

Questions

Pix4D vs DroneDeploy FAQ

Pix4D is better for surveyors who want full control of processing on their own workstation and no per-map image cap. DroneDeploy is better for construction teams that want flight planning, processing and sharing in one cloud app. For a small team that needs several people measuring for a printed price, a cloud platform with seats included, such as Dronemapping, costs less than either.

At the entry level they are close. PIX4Dmapper costs $3,990 a year and DroneDeploy Flight & Analysis costs $4,188 a year, both for one user or device. Pix4D gets more expensive once you add PIX4Dcloud for sharing, and DroneDeploy gets more expensive once you need cut and fill or more users, which moves you to a quoted plan.

Accuracy depends more on ground control, overlap and flight height than on the brand. With well-placed GCPs and checkpoints, both produce survey-grade results. Pix4D exposes more processing settings for an analyst to tune. DroneDeploy's GCP workflow is unlimited only on its quoted Advanced plan. Always compare checkpoint RMSE on your own site.

Yes. DroneDeploy's flight app supports common DJI drones, and it also processes photos captured with other planners. Pix4D works the same way through PIX4Dcapture Pro or any imagery with geotags. Dronemapping does not fly the drone, so any DJI Enterprise or consumer drone that writes GPS tags into its JPEGs works.

DroneDeploy runs in a browser, so a Mac is fine. PIX4Dmapper is a Windows desktop app. PIX4Dmatic runs on Apple silicon, but its GPU acceleration uses NVIDIA CUDA, so large jobs are slower on a Mac. Dronemapping runs in any browser and processes in the cloud, including on a MacBook or iPad.

Yes. Dronemapping Team costs $249 per month, or $2,490 a year, with 10 seats, GCP and checkpoint reports, contours, stockpile PDFs and cut and fill. Over three years that is $7,470, compared with $15,840 for PIX4Dmapper plus PIX4Dcloud Starter, or $12,564 for one DroneDeploy Flight & Analysis user.
