DroneMapping

Drone mapping software for DJI Mavic 3, Matrice, Phantom and Mini drones

DroneMapping is drone mapping software for DJI drones that runs in the cloud. Fly the mission in DJI Pilot 2, DJI GS RTK or a mapping app that supports your aircraft, upload the geotagged JPEGs, and get an orthomosaic, surface and terrain models, volumes and contours in any browser, on Windows or a Mac. It reads the DJI camera and gimbal metadata in every photo, needs no NVIDIA workstation, and starts at $99 a month with 3 seats.

Which DJI drones work for mapping, and how to fly each one

Every DJI drone that saves geotagged JPEG photos can be processed. What changes from model to model is the flight app you plan the grid in, the shutter, and how much ground control you need for survey work.

DJI aircraft Flight app for a mapping grid Camera for mapping What it suits
Mavic 3 Enterprise (M3E) DJI Pilot 2, area and oblique missions 20 MP 4/3 sensor with a mechanical shutter, optional RTK module Topographic surveys, stockpiles and construction progress on sites up to a few hundred acres
Matrice 4E DJI Pilot 2 4/3 wide camera with a mechanical shutter, built-in RTK Larger surveys and corridors where you want one aircraft for mapping and inspection
Matrice 350 RTK with Zenmuse P1 DJI Pilot 2 45 MP full-frame camera with a mechanical shutter High-accuracy surveys and large sites. LiDAR payloads such as the Zenmuse L2 need a LiDAR processor
Phantom 4 RTK DJI GS RTK 20 MP 1 inch sensor with a mechanical shutter, built-in RTK Survey firms still running a proven Phantom fleet
Mini 4 Pro Third-party Android apps on the RC-N2 controller, such as Dronelink or DroneDeploy 48 MP 1/1.3 inch sensor, rolling shutter, no RTK Small sites, roofs and quick progress maps. Fly slower and add ground control for anything measured
Older Mini, Air and Mavic models Manual grid or a planner that lists your model Rolling shutter on most models Visual maps and rough measurements, not survey deliverables

The rule of thumb for buyers: if the map feeds a design surface, a quantity or a signed survey, fly a DJI Enterprise aircraft with a mechanical shutter and RTK, and still check it with ground control.

What you get

What DroneMapping makes from DJI drone photos

  • Orthomosaic: one measurable GeoTIFF map of the site, viewed over a basemap and shared by link.
  • Surface and terrain models: a DSM and a bare-earth DTM on every plan, in WGS 84 or your State Plane or UTM zone by EPSG code, in meters or US survey feet.
  • Volumes and cut and fill: stockpile volumes on every plan, cut and fill against a design surface and stockpile PDFs on Team.
  • Contours and CAD files: DXF and SHP contours at the interval you choose, plus LAS and LAZ point clouds and OBJ meshes on Team.
  • Accuracy you can show: import GCPs and checkpoints as CSV and read the RMSE in X, Y and Z on Team.
  • Client view links: owners and engineers open the map and your measurements in a browser without a seat.

How it works

From a DJI flight to a shared map in four steps

  • Plan and fly: run an area mission in DJI Pilot 2 or your planner with about 75% front and 70% side overlap, the camera pointed straight down, at a constant altitude.
  • Upload: drag the JPEG folder from the SD card into the browser. The camera model, focal length, GPS position and gimbal angles are read from each photo.
  • Process: the cloud builds the orthomosaic, DSM, DTM and, on Team, the point cloud, mesh and contours. You get an email when the project is ready, usually the same day for a site flown in one or two batteries.
  • Measure and share: draw volumes and profiles, add the GCP report, export to CAD and send the client a view link.

Cost compared

What DJI mapping software costs a 3-person team over 3 years

Many DJI Enterprise buyers price DJI Terra first, because it comes from the same vendor. Terra is a strong Windows desktop engine, and the bigger costs sit around it: a license per processing PC and a workstation with an NVIDIA GPU and 32 GB of RAM or more. DJI Terra prices are US reseller list prices and DroneDeploy is from its own pricing page, both checked in September 2026 in USD.

Cost over 3 years DJI Terra Standard DroneDeploy Flight & Analysis DroneMapping Team
Software price $1,680 a year or $4,800 permanent, per device $4,188 a year, one admin user $1,488 a year on yearly billing, 10 seats
Two people processing at once Two licenses, $9,600 permanent or $10,080 yearly Quoted team plan Included
Computer Windows PC with an NVIDIA GPU per license Any browser Any browser, including a Mac
Cut and fill and contours Yes, on the desktop Cut and fill on the quoted Advanced plan Yes, on Team
Client sharing Export files and send them Share links View links, no seat needed
Known 3-year total $9,600 before workstations $12,564 for one user $4,464

If one person does all the processing on one PC, Terra Standard permanent at $4,800 is close to our Team plan over three years, and the workstation tips it the other way. Line-by-line figures are in DJI Terra pricing.

Honest fit

When DJI Terra is the better DJI mapping software

DJI Terra is the right buy in a few clear cases, and we would rather say so:

  1. 01

You fly LiDAR, such as the Zenmuse L2 or L3, and need the point cloud processed. We do not process LiDAR.

  2. 02

Sites have no internet or the data must stay offline, which Terra handles on its offline license.

  3. 03

You run DJI Dock or real-time 2D mapping in the field.

  4. 04

One analyst processes everything on a Windows workstation you already own.

For photo-based maps, volumes and contours shared with a team and clients, a cloud plan with seats usually costs less.

Who it is for

Who buys drone mapping software for a DJI fleet

  • Survey firms flying Mavic 3 Enterprise or Matrice 4E that need DTMs, contours and a checkpoint report in State Plane.
  • Civil and earthworks contractors that measure stockpiles and cut and fill every week and share them with the owner.
  • Aggregates yards that run month-end inventory with a Mavic 3E and need a PDF per pile.
  • Construction teams on Macs who cannot run DJI Terra and do not want a Windows PC in the trailer.

Questions

DJI drone mapping software FAQ

You need two pieces of software: a flight app that flies the grid and a processor that turns the photos into a map. DJI Enterprise drones fly mapping missions in DJI Pilot 2, the Phantom 4 RTK in DJI GS RTK, and the Mini 4 Pro in third-party Android apps. DroneMapping is the processor, in the cloud.

No. DJI Terra is paid software. US resellers list Standard at $1,680 a year or $4,800 permanent and Flagship at $3,360 a year or $9,610 permanent. DJI offers a one-month trial capped at 500 photos. It runs only on Windows with an NVIDIA graphics card.

Yes, with limits. DJI Fly has waypoints but no area mapping grid, so you fly the grid in a third-party Android app that supports the Mini 4 Pro, such as Dronelink or DroneDeploy, with the RC-N2 controller. Its rolling shutter and lack of RTK mean you should fly slower and use ground control for measured work.

For survey work, the Mavic 3 Enterprise with its RTK module is the most common choice in the US, because it has a mechanical shutter, a 4/3 sensor and DJI Pilot 2 mapping missions at a price small firms accept. The Matrice 4E and a Matrice 350 RTK with a Zenmuse P1 suit larger sites and higher accuracy.

For survey deliverables, yes, at least as checkpoints. RTK positions every photo to a few centimeters, which removes most GCPs, but checkpoints prove the vertical accuracy to your client and catch a wrong base station or geoid setting. On Team you import them as CSV and get the RMSE in X, Y and Z.

Yes, in the cloud. DJI Terra has no Mac version, so Mac teams either run a Windows PC or use a cloud processor. DroneMapping runs in Safari or Chrome on any Mac, and processing happens on our servers. Our DJI Terra alternative for Mac article compares the options.
